5 things I miss about kelowna (Already)
1) Working on my dresses. It can't have been more than 2 weeks since I packed the last dress away, yet it feels like so long. I miss the big wide open living room space that I could set up my mannequins with in and create my face off. It hasn't been long but I feel the difference in myself without those creative activities. It is the biggest excitment to look to the next few days and know that just as soon as I unpack I will be able to set up my new creative space.
2) Mild(er) weather. My first day in Calgary was -16. Christmas day brought -28 with windchill. I don't yet have the wardrobe to fit the weather although I plan to start t contribute to it as soon as I possibly can. It's taking some getting used to, the extra layers and socks and the time that it takes to apply the extra layers and socks.
3) Friendly Faces. Within a few days in Calgary I realized the big city vibe was real. I hope that as I get out more I can say its not true, but from my interactions so far, I've noticed the big city interaction style. It's less friendly, and more serious. As it often gets in a place with more people. Less happy, and more straight to business. There is nothing wrong with it by any means, just something I will need to adjust to. I have definitely grown used to being greeted in coffeeshops with words and a smile. I was spoiled by small town familiarity.
4) Scenery. This is no doubt because I am new to the city and have not yet figured out where the "go to" scenic escapes are. I miss knowing at least 5 possible outdoor shoot locations off the top of my head for whenever necessary. Last year I spent lots of time searching and discovering beautiful hidden gems throughout Kelowna for shooting. I am excited to gain a better understanding of the roads and areas of Calgary so that I can search the surrounding areas, including banff of course.
5) Familiarity. As much as I enjoy being new and exploring everything here that is so new to me, I miss the things that were so familiar to me that I barely thought twice about them: Where we did our grocery shopping, my collection of favorite thrift shops, the gas station just a few minutes from the house. I know Calgary will offer all of these things and more, but right now I'm at the "go find it all" stage. It will be nice to understand where the basics are, so that I can focus on finding the more dynamic and gorgeous scenery.
