Last week I had a makeup artist cancel last minute. It wasn't my first cancellation, and I'm sure it won't be my last. I had been looking forward to the shoot for a while, and didn't really want to cancel because the makeup artist couldn't make it. The week before I had gone on a specific search for the closest and best Calgary dollar store. They are different here, harder to find, and less of them stock the products I am looking for (fake nails mostly). So I found a store called "dollar store" on my gps. Not to my surprise, when I arrived, it didn't feel or seem like a real dollar store, but one of those new age "dollar stores". Buddy was selling bongs at the front counter. We're talking 40-70 $ merch. But whatever, why not call it a dollar store? SO before I even get inside the store, my eyes are drawn to a costume store attached to the same building. A sign across the door that read: "Closing out sale, evrything 50% off" caught my attention quite well and quickly. I entered at my own risk, knowing it would tricky to keep my hands free with such deals all around. As soon as I entered, there was a unicorn mask on top of one of the displays in the room I knew was going to be mine.
So back to the cancellation... I thought about it for a bit... The options, the plans b & c. The best and only thing that really made sense was to try out my new and fresh unicorn mask. I've also conducted a plan to use the mask regularly, for MAU cancellations, or other artsy studies. It was so interesting to pose in a mask. I couldn't see through the mask, so practicing in it like I do with natural posework did not make things more familiar. King Rosales, who was the first to shoot the mask, informed me that mask shooting can be a tricky aspect of photography. I loved the shots as a set, and really dug the editorial style vibe. It looks like an anventure, which is was, completely. I also have to add how excited I am to begin to do more outdoor projects. Yes, a few of my outdoor shoots so far this season have been premature, but eventually the heat is bound to catch up with me and my ongoing projects.

Some of you know I have been recruiting models to showcase my new collection as it comes to. Because of some recent experiences with models and last minute cancellations, I haven't done any public castings. I've been asking my photographer friends to send me their favorites........ The models they think would be both interested, and show up. I've been tottering with the idea of creating a sort of "guidelines" policy for how I deal with cancellations, etc. I don't really want to.. It's kind of one of those things that maybe just needs to be done eventually. I will see how the rest of the month pans out for project completion. From my personal experience, the stronger the connection between collaborators, the lesser the chance of cancellations.
I've added the first set between King Rosales & I to my calgary portfolio page. You can see the set in more depth there. Meanwhile I've attached a few previews of a little shoot that I thought was fabulous:
